Northern LGPS appoints Councillor Paul Doughty as its new chairman

Councillor Paul Doughty has been named chairman of the Northern Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) pool, replacing Ian Greenwood who died in November.

He begins in the role at the £45bn pool with immediate effect, and was previously a co-vice chair alongside Brenda Warrington. He is succeeded as co-vice chair by West Yorkshire Pension Fund chairman Andrew Thornton.

Councillor Doughty is also chairman of the £9bn Merseyside Pension Fund and acting chairman of the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum, where Greenwood had also been chairman until his death. Greenwood had taken over both roles from Kieran Quinn, who died while in post in December 2017.

Councillor Doughty said it was a “real privilege” to take on the role.

“Both Ian and his predecessor, Kieran Quinn, brought tremendous energy and commitment to this role and to the honourable aim of ensuring council workers enjoy a decent and dignified retirement,” he continued.

“Northern LGPS is totally committed to remaining the most cost-effective and efficient pool in the LGPS, underpinned by a simple but effective democratic governance structure.”
